New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered the removal of various important officials in several states. On Monday, the ECI directed the removal of home secretaries in six states: Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The Director General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal was also relieved from duties.
The ECI also relieved the Secretaries of the General Administrative Department in Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh. The commission has made it mandatory that officers who have been serving for three years or stationed in their home districts, and are involved in election-related activities, be transferred. The ECI has issued instructions to all state governments accordingly.
Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and additional/deputy commissioners have received transfer orders from the Commission, to be carried out by 6 pm today. The Chief Secretary of Maharashtra was instructed to transfer similarly placed municipal commissioners and additional/deputy municipal commissioners to other corporations within the state.
These decisions were reached during a commission meeting chaired by Rajiv Kumar, with newly-appointed Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu also in attendance.
The Lok Sabha Elections 2024 are scheduled to be conducted in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, with vote counting slated for June 4. The term of the current government is set to conclude on June 16.
