Mumbai, May 1 2026 (APAC Media): Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the long-awaited Mumbai-Pune Expressway ‘Missing Link’ project on May 1, 2026, marking Maharashtra Day.
Developed by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, the 13.3-kilometre stretch is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Mumbai and Pune.
The project bypasses the accident-prone Khopoli-Khandala ghat section, reducing travel distance by around six kilometres and cutting journey time by 20 to 30 minutes. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar will also be present at the inauguration.

Engineering marvel with advanced features
Built at an estimated cost of Rs. 6,700 crore, the project stands out for its complex engineering. It includes twin tunnels, one stretching 8.92 kilometres—among the longest in Asia—and another 1.75 kilometres long. With widths reaching up to 23.75 metres, these tunnels are among the widest in the world and can support eight lanes of traffic.
The tunnels are equipped with modern safety systems such as ventilation, lighting, and emergency exits. The widest tunnel is also being considered for a Guinness World Record.
Iconic bridge and improved access
A key highlight is a 650-metre cable-stayed bridge over Tiger Valley, supported by pillars up to 184 metres high, making it one of India’s tallest road bridges. The structure can withstand wind speeds of up to 252 km/h and features a 305-metre main span.
The project also includes an 850-metre viaduct, ensuring smooth passage through the rugged Sahyadri terrain. The route connects Khopoli to Kusgaon near Lonavala and passes beneath Lonavala Lake.
Work on the project began around 2018–2019 but faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, heavy monsoons, and challenging terrain. With the inauguration now set, the project is expected to ease congestion, improve safety, and benefit daily commuters and tourists alike.
