New Delhi, May 1 (APAC Media): India’s railway connectivity is set to get a major boost with the launch of the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, which will provide the first direct rail link between the two cities.
Regular services on the new Vande Bharat route are expected to begin from May 2.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is expected to flag off the train from Jammu Railway Station. Operated by Indian Railways, the semi-high-speed rail link is an extension of the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat route.
“Seamless connectivity strengthening Jammu & Kashmir’s growth journey! Flagged off the newly extended 20-coach Vande Bharat Express from Jammu to Srinagar,” Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a post on X.

The new railway link will considerably reduce travel time between Jammu and Srinagar. Passengers will now be able to travel directly by train without depending on road transport, which is often disrupted due to weather conditions and highway closures.
Key Stops of the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Train
The train will run through one of the most challenging railway corridors built in the country. Starting from Jammu Tawi, it will pass through major stations including Udhampur, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Banihal, and Anantnag before reaching Srinagar.
One of the key highlights of the route is the crossing over the Chenab Rail Bridge, recognised as the world’s highest railway bridge. The journey also includes several tunnels through the Pir Panjal range, helping maintain rail connectivity even during difficult weather conditions.
To support operations during cold weather conditions, the train has been equipped with several features like:
- Heated bio-toilets
- Heating systems in water tanks
- Windshield heating technology to prevent fogging
- Heated air dryer systems to improve braking performance during snowfall
Travel Duration Between Jammu and Srinagar
The travel time between Jammu and Srinagar through the new railway link is expected to be around six hours. This is considerably shorter than the usual road journey, which takes around 8 to 12 hours depending on traffic and weather.
The service is likely to operate during daytime hours, allowing passengers to enjoy scenic views of the Himalayan landscape along the route.
