New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released a set of guidelines that schools need to follow for Children with Special Needs (CwSN). The guidelines aim to ensure that CwSN receive equal opportunities in education, sports, and recreation. They intend to promote inclusivity by instructing schools to provide an environment for both the academic and social development of CwSN.
The guidelines are in line with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, specifically Section 16. It mandates all educational institutions funded or recognized by the government to offer inclusive education to children with disabilities.
Key directions that have been set up by the CBSE to be followed by the schools are:
- Make campus infrastructure accessible with various facilities like accessible washrooms, classes, and hallways available.
- Ensure that education for children who are blind, deaf, or both is imparted in the most appropriate language and modes of communication
- Take suitable pedagogical measures to resolve specific learning disabilities in children with disabilities.
- Monitor the progress of children with special needs in terms of attainment of educational goals.
- Provide transportation support to children with disabilities and their attendants if needed.
The CBSE issued these guidelines in light of the multiple written requests it had received from various schools to optimize provisions for the CwSN students.
