New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced a new enrolment process for students seeking admission to Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online Programmes beginning in the academic year 2024-25. With effect from September 2024, this modification attempts to improve admissions process transparency and guarantee that students only enroll in authorized Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs).
The new process was unveiled by UGC Chairman Professor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, who emphasized that it complies with the UGC (ODL Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, which provide the minimal requirements for such programs. He pointed out that to protect students’ interests, a uniform admissions process is necessary in light of recent problems with students being admitted to unrecognized institutions.
To use the new system, students must first register on the UGC-DEB website and use their Academic Bank of Credit (ABC)-ID to create a unique DEB-ID. Except for international students, all students enrolling in accredited ODL and online programs must have a valid DEB-ID, which will last for the duration of their lifespan. To guarantee that this new admission method is successfully adopted, HEIs are asked to efficiently implement and promote it.
