New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has given approval for Chandrayaan-4 mission to develop and demonstrate re-entry technologies to come back to Earth after successfully landing on the Moon and also collect moon samples and analyze them on Earth. Major technologies that are required for docking/undocking, landing, safe return to Earth, and also accomplishing lunar sample collection and analysis are planned to be developed by the year 2040.
Under Chandrayaan-4, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will be responsible for the development and launch of the spacecraft. The mission is expected to be completed within 3 years of approval with the participation of industry and academia. All the critical technologies will be indigenously developed, thereby supporting the idea of an ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’. The mission is also expected to generate high employment and enable technology spin-off to other sectors of the economy.
The mission would help in developing critical foundational technologies for manned missions, lunar sample return, and scientific analysis of Lunar samples. There would be a significant involvement of the Indian industry and academia through science meets and workshops. This mission will also aid in the establishment of facilities for the curation and analysis of the returned samples.
