Bengaluru: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has introduced electric vehicle (EV) battery-swapping stations at select metro stations in collaboration with SUN Mobility. The initiative is aimed at addressing last-mile connectivity issues and promoting sustainable transportation options for commuters.
Battery-Swapping Facilities to Enhance Accessibility
The battery-swapping stations are strategically located in parking areas and auto stands at metro premises, offering easy access to commuters traveling to and from metro trains. Currently, seven stations along the Green and Purple Lines are operational, and 12 more are set to launch soon.
Initial Success and Usage Data
Since their installation, the stations have supported over 1,25,000 kilometers of travel, catering to approximately 19,000 vehicles. Each station serves around 2,800 vehicles daily, with 2,300 two-wheeler trips and 500 three-wheeler trips on average.
BMRCL’s Vision for Sustainable Mobility
According to BMRCL Managing Director Maheshwar Rao M, the initiative reflects the corporation’s commitment to integrating innovative and eco-friendly solutions into the city’s transportation system. “This partnership enhances last-mile connectivity while aligning with our goal of sustainable urban mobility,” he said.
Future Expansion Plans
The project underscores BMRCL’s efforts to integrate EV infrastructure into Bengaluru’s public transport system. With the current success of the battery-swapping services, the initiative is expected to expand city-wide, potentially setting a precedent for similar collaborations in other metro networks across India.
By prioritizing EV infrastructure, BMRCL aims to reduce Bengaluru’s carbon footprint while addressing urban mobility challenges, encouraging wider adoption of clean energy solutions among commuters.
