New Delhi: NITI Aayog has signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) with Sarvam AI to pilot an Enterprise Reasoning Engine (ERE) on the National Data and Analytics Portal (NDAP), a platform designed to democratize access to government data. The initiative aims to harness Generative AI (GenAI) to transform data access and analysis, making it more intuitive and actionable for users.
The Enterprise Reasoning Engine will introduce a natural language interface that allows users to interact seamlessly with both structured and unstructured data hosted on NDAP. This technological leap will provide precise answers and actionable insights, enhancing the efficiency of data-driven decision-making. The collaboration underscores NITI Aayog’s commitment to fostering innovation and advancing data-driven governance across sectors.

A Milestone in Data Accessibility
NDAP was launched in 2022 to make public government data accessible, interoperable, and user-friendly. The platform hosts foundational datasets from various government agencies, offering tools for analytics and visualization to facilitate data-driven insights. NDAP’s public launch followed a beta phase in August 2021, during which select users provided feedback to refine the platform.
“The rise of data and digital technologies is rapidly transforming economies and societies, with enormous implications for governments’ daily operations,” said Amitabh Kant, former CEO of NITI Ayayog and India’s G20 Sherpa, during the launch of NDAP. “This platform aims to aid India’s progress by promoting data-driven disclosure and decision-making, ensuring the availability of data connecting till the last mile. NDAP is an example of how the power of data can be leveraged.”
The platform takes a use-case-based approach, ensuring datasets cater to diverse user groups, including government, academia, journalism, civil society, and private enterprises. NDAP enables cross-sectoral analysis and easy data integration by standardising datasets to a common schema.
NDAP’s datasets are categorized by sectors, covering areas such as Agriculture, Health, Governance, Education, and Energy. Popular datasets include information on schemes like Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan, and data on adult victims of kidnapping and abduction.
APAC News Analysis: Gen AI’s Growing Role in Governance
The partnership between NITI Aayog and Sarvam AI comes as the Indian government actively explores Generative AI to streamline operations, enhance citizen engagement, and improve policy analysis. The use of GenAI tools, such as the ERE, aligns with broader efforts to revolutionise governance through advanced data technologies.
According to recent market projections, the GenAI market in India is poised to reach a valuation of $8.3 billion by 2030, growing at an impressive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 42%. This rapid expansion is fueled by the adoption of GenAI across sectors like business services, healthcare, and education.
Pioneering Data-Driven Governance
The implementation of the ERE on NDAP marks a significant step in leveraging GenAI for governance. It will not only enhance decision-making but also foster innovation across sectors, reinforcing India’s position as a hub for GenAI development and deployment.
By combining the comprehensive data resources of NDAP with cutting-edge GenAI capabilities, NITI Aayog and Sarvam AI aim to create a future where governance is more efficient, transparent, and inclusive. This initiative is set to pave the way for smarter governance, powered by advanced analytics and AI-driven insights.
