New Delhi: Former Aakash Educational Services CEO Aakash Chaudhry has returned to the edtech space with the launch of Sparkl, an AI-powered online tutoring platform. The platform targets students in grades 6 to 12, focusing on international curricula like IGCSE and IB.
Seed Funding Secured from Industry Leaders
Sparkl has raised seed funding from Rainmatter, led by Zerodha’s Nithin Kamath, and Zomato’s Deepinder Goyal. While the exact investment amount remains undisclosed, the funds will primarily be allocated to hiring educators, enhancing AI technology, and marketing efforts, according to Chaudhry.
Challenges in a Shifting Edtech Market
Chaudhry’s return to the sector comes amid a challenging phase for Indian edtech. The industry has faced declining investor confidence, reduced demand for online learning post-pandemic, and financial difficulties for major players.
Co-Founders with Proven Experience
Chaudhry co-founded Sparkl with Pavan Chauhan, the former co-founder of Meritnation, which operates as a subsidiary of Aakash. The new venture aims to stand out by providing personalized, one-on-one tutoring, leveraging AI to improve the learning experience.
A Strategic Comeback
Chaudhry stepped down from Aakash after its acquisition by Byju’s in 2021. His new initiative seeks to address gaps in the online education landscape, particularly in niche, globally recognized curricula.
Sparkl’s focus on AI-driven solutions aligns with the growing interest in personalized education, but its ability to succeed will depend on how it navigates a market that is still recovering.
