New Delhi: The Indian government is set to launch the National Legal Metrology Portal (eMaap) to promote fair trade practices and enhance consumer protection. The initiative is part of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs’ efforts to ensure transparency, accountability, and compliance with legal metrology standards.
The key features of the portal are as follows:
- The portal will serve as a one-stop digital platform for businesses and consumers, offering streamlined access to services related to legal metrology.Â
- It will provide automated workflows for faster processing of applications, real-time tracking of compliance status, and access to updated guidelines on metrology laws and regulations.
- It will provide facilities for registration, licensing, and certification, enabling businesses to comply efficiently with legal requirements.Â
- For consumers, the portal is expected to enhance awareness about their rights and provide mechanisms to address grievances related to measurement inaccuracies or violations.
Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, Piyush Goyal, stated that the Legal Metrology Portal is a step toward fostering a balanced marketplace where consumer interests are safeguarded while supporting businesses in meeting legal obligations. The step aligns with the government’s vision of leveraging technology to simplify regulatory processes and promote ease of doing business. Officials emphasized that the platform would reduce the administrative burden on businesses while ensuring stricter enforcement of metrology standards to protect consumers from unfair practices.
The launch of this portal marks a significant milestone in the government’s digital transformation agenda, aiming to create a fair and transparent trade environment that benefits both businesses and consumers across the country.
