Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a Defence PSU specializing in warship production, has added five electric vehicles (EVs) to its fleet, bringing the total to 19. The move aligns with its efforts to adopt sustainable practices and also reduce carbon emissions.
The new EVs were officially inducted at GRSE’s 61 Park Unit in Kolkata, with DIG Subrato Ghosh, ICG (Retd.), Director (Personnel), GRSE, flagging them off in the presence of representatives from Orix Auto Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd., Tata Motors, and GRSE officials. This step is part of the Government of India’s “Go Electric Campaign,” aimed at promoting e-mobility.
Since adopting EVs three years ago, GRSE reports having saved 1,19,700 litres of fossil fuel and reduced carbon emissions by 208.5 metric tons. With the addition of these five vehicles, the company anticipates a further reduction of 24.82 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.
GRSE has emphasized that its EV adoption supports the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by contributing to the domestic EV manufacturing ecosystem. “This initiative reinforces our commitment to sustainability while reducing our environmental footprint,” said DIG Ghosh.
The company has also highlighted its broader efforts to integrate green technologies into shipbuilding projects. GRSE is exploring eco-friendly solutions for its maritime platforms, aligning its operations with sustainability goals.
This development underscores a growing trend among public sector units toward adopting cleaner technologies to address climate challenges while enhancing operational efficiency.
