New Delhi: With the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 drawing near, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has undertaken extensive measures to ensure seamless communication for millions of devotees and visitors. It has instructed the telecom service providers to deploy advanced technology and optimize networks to support the massive influx of devotees. Upgrades to telecom infrastructure across Prayagraj city, the Mela area, and key public spaces have been prioritized to support the world’s largest religious gathering.
Enhanced Connectivity Across Prayagraj City
To bolster connectivity in Prayagraj city, 126 km of optical fiber has been laid, strengthening the backbone of telecom services. Additionally, 328 new towers/masts and 575 new Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) have been deployed, alongside upgrades to 1,462 existing BTS units. These measures aim to deliver robust, uninterrupted connectivity for both residents and visitors during the Mela.
Advanced Telecom Infrastructure in Mela Area
In the Mela area, which will host an unparalleled number of devotees, the DoT has laid 192 km of optical fiber to provide high-speed and reliable network coverage. To cater to the influx of attendees, 78 Cell on Wheels or CoWs (transportable towers) and 150 outdoor Small Cell solutions are being deployed. Furthermore, 352 new BTS units and upgrades to 50 existing BTS units will ensure smooth communication in crowded zones.
Optimized Services at Public Spaces and Highways
Key public spaces, including railway stations, bus terminals, airports, parking spaces, and highways, are being optimized for enhanced telecom services. A special focus has been placed on the Green Corridor, a critical route for traffic flow, to ensure consistent network service even in high-traffic areas.
Citizen-Centric Initiatives and Safety Measures
To enhance public safety, 53 help desks have been set up to assist visitors with fraud communications, mobile blocking, and other telecom issues. Radiation testing has confirmed all towers comply with permissible limits, safeguarding public health. Emergency alert systems like the Cell Broadcast Alert facility and Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) platform will disseminate disaster warnings and public messages efficiently.
Disaster Management Preparedness
Three disaster management centers, jointly operated by Airtel, BSNL, Jio, and Vi, have been established within the Mela area. These centers are equipped with cutting-edge technology to maintain communication during crises and ensure rapid emergency response.
Enhanced Digital Experience for Devotees
The upgraded telecom infrastructure is designed to provide not only seamless connectivity but also an enhanced digital experience for attendees. From mobile-based payments to live streaming of rituals, the DoT aims to offer a modern, efficient, and accessible Mela experience.
As a global event of immense cultural and spiritual significance, the Kumbh Mela demands top-tier infrastructure. The DoT’s comprehensive upgrades underscore its commitment to delivering reliable and high-quality telecom services for millions of pilgrims, visitors, and stakeholders.
