Gurugram: Blinkit, a quick commerce platform, has introduced a 10-minute ambulance service in select areas of Gurugram as part of a pilot project, aiming to address delays in medical emergencies.
Pilot Initiative Focuses on Emergency Response
The service, which became operational on Thursday, allows users to call for an ambulance directly through the Blinkit app. The ambulances are equipped with essential life-saving equipment, such as oxygen cylinders, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), stretchers, suction machines, and emergency medicines, according to a company statement.
Each ambulance is staffed with a paramedic, a duty assistant, and a trained driver to ensure safe and efficient medical support. Additionally, the vehicles include a wheelchair and a scoop stretcher for patient transportation.
Plans for Expansion Across Major Cities
Blinkit CEO Albinder Dhindsa stated that the pilot project begins with five ambulances in Gurugram, with plans to expand the service to other areas soon. Over the next two years, the company aims to introduce the initiative in major cities across India.
“Our goal is to address the lack of quick and reliable ambulance services in cities. Profit is not the objective here; the service will be offered at an affordable cost to ensure accessibility,” Dhindsa said in a statement.
Critical Gaps in Urban Emergency Healthcare
This initiative highlights a critical gap in emergency medical response in urban areas. While some private ambulance operators exist, access to immediate medical aid during emergencies remains a challenge for many citizens. Blinkit’s model could be a step toward improving urban healthcare infrastructure by reducing response times in medical crises.
The success of the pilot project in Gurugram will likely determine its future rollout in other cities. The company has not yet provided details on the cost of the service or the areas it will target next.
