New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has proposed a metro extension to link Noida International Airport and Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), aiming to improve connectivity and reduce travel time.
Key Details of the Metro Extension
The plan involves extending the Golden Line Metro, which currently operates between Aerocity and Tughlakabad, to Kalindi Kunj. This extension will connect with the Botanical Garden Metro Station, providing a seamless link between Noida and IGI Airport.
According to Shiv Om Dwivedi, Chief Project Manager of DMRC, the proposed 5-km elevated track will include two new stations—Sarita Vihar and Madanpur Khadar. The project is estimated to cost Rs 950 crore, with funding requested from the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA).
Once operational, the extended line will integrate with the Magenta Line, which currently connects Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden, significantly improving access for commuters traveling between Noida, Greater Noida, and IGI Airport.
Timelines and Challenges
DMRC plans to complete the Tughlakabad-Kalindi Kunj extension within three years if the proposal is approved. However, the broader Namo Bharat Metro route, designed to directly connect Noida International Airport, will take an estimated six years to complete.
The current Botanical Garden Metro Station, a critical junction between the Magenta and Blue Lines, will serve as a key interchange point for travelers. The Magenta Line currently covers 25 stations, including 15 underground and 10 elevated ones.
Impact and Next Steps
If approved, this extension will benefit air travelers and daily commuters by offering a faster, more efficient travel link between the two major airports. The proposal has been submitted to the government, and DMRC aims to fast-track the project once funding is secured.
The project is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening regional connectivity and supporting the growing passenger traffic at both airports.
