New Delhi: The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has reached a key milestone, with over 10 lakh households installing rooftop solar panels under the scheme, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced on Tuesday.
1 Million Installations Completed
As of 10 March 2025, India has completed 10.09 lakh rooftop solar installations under the initiative, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). The scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024, aims to solarise 1 crore homes by March 2027. The government has set an interim target of 20 lakh installations by October 2025.
The initiative, with a financial outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, provides subsidies to households for installing rooftop solar systems. So far, 6.13 lakh beneficiaries have received subsidies totaling Rs 4,770 crore.
Increase in Domestic Solar Capacity
The scheme has helped install over 3 GW of rooftop solar capacity across the country. It is also boosting local manufacturing, particularly in inverters and Balance of Plant (BoP) components, supporting India’s renewable energy goals.
Role of DISCOMs and Future Targets
State power distribution companies (DISCOMs) are playing a crucial role in implementing the scheme. They facilitate net meter installations, conduct inspections, and ensure timely commissioning of rooftop solar systems. To support DISCOMs in their role, the government has allocated Rs 4,950 crore under the “Incentives to DISCOMs” component.
With 47.3 lakh applications already received, the scheme is expected to accelerate rooftop solar adoption in the coming months.
