Aizawl: In an unwanted list, Mizoram has topped the list among states in the Northeast in cybercrime cases in the last three years.
Financial frauds top the list of Mizoram cybercrimes, accounting for 56.38 per cent of 321 cases registered between January 2020 and 11 March 2025.
As per the Mizoram state cybercrime police station, 181 cases of financial crimes were registered, mainly involving online banking fraud and cheating by impersonation.
This was followed by 32 cases of identity theft, 16 cases of child pornography, nine cases of social media harassment, seven cases of copyright infringement, five cases of false rumours and one hacking case.
Mizoram registered the highest 158 cybercrime cases in 2022, followed by 72 in 2023 and 41 in 2024. Out of these 41, there were 17 related to financial crimes and 15 to sexual harassment in 2024.
In 2025, till 11 March, another 13 cybercrime cases were registered, with six related to sexual harassment and four to financial fraud.
While the dwindling number of cases over the years was a positive sign, another silver lining was the recovery of Rs 1.42 crore in financial fraud cases between 2021 and 11 March 2025.
Another deterrent is that 113 people have been arrested in cybercrime cases since 2021, including eight juveniles. Out of them, 40 have been convicted.
