Yamunanagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday initiated key energy and infrastructure projects in Haryana, including a new thermal power unit and a biogas plant, aimed at addressing power demands and promoting clean energy at the regional level.
Thermal Power Expansion in Yamunanagar
The foundation stone was laid for an 800 MW thermal power unit at the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram Thermal Power Plant in Yamunanagar. Spread across 233 acres and estimated to cost around Rs 8,470 crore, the unit is expected to contribute to Haryana’s electricity supply, particularly supporting local industries in Yamunanagar known for plywood and metalware manufacturing.
This new unit marks the third addition to the existing plant and comes as part of the state’s broader plan to improve energy security. The Prime Minister underscored the relevance of uninterrupted power for industrial hubs and referred to historical power shortages, noting that capacity has nearly doubled nationally over the last decade.
Push for Cleaner Energy
In parallel with fossil-fuel-based energy expansion, Modi also laid the foundation for a Compressed Biogas (CBG) Plant at Mukarabpur, Yamunanagar. With a projected capacity of 2,600 metric tonnes per year, the plant aims to convert organic waste into fuel, aligning with India’s clean energy and waste management goals.
Solar Initiative and Citizen Engagement
The Prime Minister also launched the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, encouraging citizens to install solar panels on their rooftops. The scheme aims to reduce household electricity costs while enabling surplus energy to be sold back to the grid. Over 1.25 crore registrations have been recorded so far, with increasing participation from Haryana.
