New Delhi: Delhi’s Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, offered reassurance on Friday, May 16, 2025, stating that Mohalla Clinic employees need not worry about layoffs amidst the upcoming healthcare system revamp.
“There is no reason to worry. No one will lose their job. The existing [Mohalla Clinic] staff will be prioritised in the new healthcare framework introduced by the government,” she said.
CM Gupta provided his promise just hours after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) asserted that the Delhi government was planning to “lay off” thousands of employees at Mohalla Clinics in addition to “shutting down” these essential medical services.
AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj stated during a news conference on 7 May that there is “no plan” to retain the staff at the party’s flagship Mohalla Clinics, according to the minutes of a meeting held on that day. Reportedly, Urban Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs (U-AAMs) will take their place.
“Thousands of doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and multi-task workers at Mohalla Clinics reached the Chief Minister’s ‘Janata Darbar’ today. They went there because a decision had been made to terminate their jobs,” said Bharadwaj.
As per the Delhi Health Department, 1,139 U-AAMs will be set up, and the existing 553 Mohalla Clinics will be upgraded.
