Lucknow:Â The Uttar Pradesh stamp and registration department is set to begin digitising revenue records predating 1990, marking the next phase in its ongoing initiative to modernise and preserve land and property documentation across the state.
According to department officials, the digitisation exercise has so far covered 95 per cent of documents dated between 2002 and 2017. The process for records from 1990 to 2001 is currently underway, with tenders issued through the Uttar Pradesh Development Systems Corporation (UPDESCO).
The upcoming phase will focus specifically on pre-1990 documents, which are considered at higher risk due to age-related deterioration and ongoing demand for historical land ownership verification.
A dedicated institution will soon be identified to undertake the digitisation of these archival documents. The department noted that the digitisation process is being implemented in phases to ensure accuracy, security and compliance with archival standards.
Central Record Room to House Physical Copies
Once scanned, the physical copies of pre-1990 documents will be transferred to the Central Record Room. This step is expected to reduce the volume of paper files held at sub-registrar offices, improving records management and freeing up storage capacity.
Officials noted that relocating these documents would not only streamline operations at the local level but also enhance the safety and longevity of original records.
Improved Access and Administrative Efficiency
The digitisation of legacy revenue records is intended to simplify public access to property and land-related information.
With records stored in secure digital formats, turnaround times for government services, such as property registration and ownership verification, are expected to improve. The initiative is also aimed at enhancing transparency and reducing administrative delays in land-related transactions.
