Chennai: In a major step towards realizing the Indian Army Chief’s 2024 vision of “a drone for every soldier,” the Dakshin Bharat Area, in collaboration with ZUPPA Geo Navigation Technologies Pvt. Ltd., has initiated the establishment of a Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) Lab at the Madras Regimental Centre (MRC).
Significance of the partnership
ZUPPA will lead the development of this advanced facility. The initiative stems from operational lessons learned during Operation Sindoor, which highlighted the critical need for soldiers to independently maintain and troubleshoot drones under high-stress combat scenarios.
Sai Pattabiram, Founder and Managing Director of ZUPPA, emphasized that the core challenge in drone warfare lies not only in piloting but also in understanding the complex electronics onboard. He stated that the lab is designed to provide a hands-on, tech-intensive learning ecosystem focused on diagnosing and managing high electromagnetic field (EMF) interference with onboard sensors.
Key features of the lab & ZUPPA’s plans
One of the unique aspects of the ZUPPA MRO Lab is its integrated Learning Management System (LMS), which delivers modular training, from basic component identification to advanced EMF diagnostics. The LMS allows instructors and learners to access training material remotely, making it ideal for large-scale Agniveer training programs. It will also support the reskilling of retiring soldiers for civilian drone sector jobs and serve the ongoing education needs of serving personnel enrolled in military courses.
Venkatesh Sai, Co-founder and Technical Director of ZUPPA, noted that the Indian Army’s adoption of their indigenous MRO solution validates both the company’s technical strength and scalable delivery model. ZUPPA has also extended its innovation labs to AICTE-approved colleges, aiming to link academic research with defense requirements.
Plans are already in motion to expand the MRO initiative to other technical arms of the Army.
