New Delhi: State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has officially named its 5G service ‘Q-5G’, short for Quantum 5G, signalling its entry into the next generation of mobile connectivity.
BSNL stated that the name ‘Q-5G’ reflects the power, speed and futuristic essence of its upcoming 5G network.

The telecom firm’s decision to involve its user base in the naming process is part of a broader strategy to build engagement as it prepares to roll out the much-anticipated 5G service across India.
The launch of Q-5G comes at a time when BSNL is actively strengthening its mobile network infrastructure. As part of its expansion efforts, Union Minister of State for Communications, Dr. Chandrashekhar Pemmasani, recently revealed that BSNL has proposed the installation of an additional 100,000 mobile towers to support 4G and future 5G services. The proposal is currently awaiting Union Cabinet approval.
This follows the earlier phase, where BSNL had already deployed 100,000 4G/5G towers. Of these, more than 70,000 towers are currently operational, forming the backbone for the upcoming 5G rollout.
The total investment allocated for maintaining the new infrastructure stands at Rs 13,000 crore over the next 10 years.
The deployment is being executed using indigenous technology partners. In 2023, BSNL awarded contracts to global telecom vendor Ericsson for equipment installation, while Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Tejas Networks are responsible for deploying and maintaining the mobile tower infrastructure.
