Lucknow: In a major step towards building disaster resilience, the Uttar Pradesh government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).Â
The agreement, signed in Lucknow in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, aims to modernize and strengthen the state’s disaster management systems.
Focus on Risk Reduction and Grassroots Preparedness
This three-year collaboration will focus on reducing disaster risks and building a coordinated, science-based relief framework. UNDP India Head Angela Lusigi, who attended the signing, praised the state’s commitment and promised full technical support for the initiative.
The project will involve the preparation of district disaster management plans for all 75 districts in the state. In addition, 15 key departments will develop their own disaster plans, and detailed project reports (DPRs) will be prepared for 10 departments. Urban disaster risk assessments and management plans will also be created for 20 major cities.
Funding and Key Areas of Implementation
The Uttar Pradesh government has sanctioned Rs 19.99 crore for the project. The funds will be used over three years in phases. Key areas of focus include
- Strengthening the disaster information system through better integration
- Organizing training workshops to improve preparedness
- Procuring ICT tools and equipment
- Setting up a Project Management Unit (PMU) within the Relief Commissioner’s Office
Alignment with National and Global Guidelines
All project activities will align with the technical guidelines of the UNDP and follow recommendations from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
