New Delhi, May 18 (APAC Media): The Union Education Ministry has collaborated with the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) to address India’s school dropout crisis.
During a high-level meeting, chaired by Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, a plan was created for re-enrolling an estimated 2 crore children between the ages of 14 and 18 who have dropped out of school.
Official data reveals a worrying trend in the education system: out of every 100 students who begin schooling in Class 1, only 62 complete Class 12. Financial hardships, family responsibilities, and other socioeconomic challenges have been identified as the major reasons behind students leaving school early.
To address the issue, the government will initially implement the project in 10 districts across states with high dropout rates, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Odisha.
Apart from promoting secondary education completion, the initiative will also provide vocational training linked to local employment opportunities. The government plans to use app-based monitoring systems and trained facilitators to turn the programme into a nationwide people’s movement.
