New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 18 August, convened a high-level meeting with senior Union Ministers, government officials and economists to chart the course for India’s next wave of economic reforms.
The deliberations come just days after he announced a dedicated task force for “next-generation reforms” during his Independence Day address.
The meeting was attended by key members of the Cabinet, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Lalan Singh.
Top Secretaries and policy experts were also part of the discussions.

In his 15 August speech, PM Modi had highlighted the government’s plan to recalibrate the Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, while also laying emphasis on long-term strategies to make India self-reliant in critical areas such as semiconductors, fertilisers and other key industries.
Monday’s meeting is seen as the first step towards translating those announcements into concrete policy measures.
By initiating consultations at the highest level, the next-generation reforms in taxation, manufacturing and strategic sectors may remain at the core of its agenda in the coming months.
The task force announced last week is expected to present detailed recommendations that could shape India’s economic trajectory for the next decade.
