New Delhi: The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) will inaugurate Asia’s largest sewage treatment plant (STP) at Okhla on September 30, marking the completion of a Rs 1,161 crore project launched in 2019.
Built under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the plant has a capacity of 124 million gallons per day (MGD). It is expected to benefit nearly 40 lakh residents across the South, Central, and Old Delhi.
Spread over 40 acres, the new facility replaces four older STPs at the same site. Officials said the plant will generate electricity from treated waste and produce A-class reusable sludge. Once operational, it will be the single largest contributor to Delhi’s sewage treatment capacity and a significant step toward reducing untreated wastewater flow into the Yamuna.
Though the project faced delays due to the pandemic and construction bans, work was completed earlier this year, followed by successful trial runs. Funding for the plant came under Yamuna Action Plan-III, with the Centre contributing 85 percent and the Delhi government covering the remainder.
The STP will cater to areas including Civil Lines, Paharganj, Green Park, Hauz Khas, Lajpat Nagar, New Friends Colony, CR Park, Okhla, and Sarita Vihar.
