Chennai: Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, is set to inaugurate the newly upgraded Chembarambakkam Water Treatment Plant on 20th September 2025. This will benefit over 20 lakh households in South Chennai with improved water supply.Â
The plant’s capacity has been enhanced to 530 million litres per day (MLD), marking a major step in strengthening the city’s water infrastructure.
Commissioned in 2007 by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, the Chembarambakkam plant had been supplying only 265 MLD of treated water to several key areas including Anna Nagar, Adyar, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, and Teynampet, as well as parts of Tambaram and Avadi corporations.
According to Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) Managing Director T. G. Vinay, the lower supply was due to the presence of only one transmission pipeline. The second pipeline, meant to carry the additional capacity, faced prolonged delays because of permission issues with the National Highways Authority of India. Frequent cancellations of contracts further discouraged contractors from taking up the work.
With the completion of the long-pending works, the plant can now operate at its full capacity of 530 MLD. Water will be drawn based on actual demand.
Previously, water from the plant was supplied for only four to five hours a day. With the expanded capacity, supply is planned to increase to six to eight hours in areas under the Greater Chennai Corporation, Tambaram, and Avadi corporations.
Residents have welcomed the upgrade, noting that the longer supply duration will reduce their dependence on private tanker lorries, especially during the summer months.
