New Delhi: Senior IAS Piyush Goyal (1994 batch), belonging to the Nagaland cadre, has officially assumed charge as Secretary in the Ministry of Mines.
Before this appointment, Goyal served as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) under the Ministry of Home Affairs. At NATGRID, he played a key role in strengthening data and intelligence integration for national security. His leadership was credited with driving technology-led governance and improving coordination among security agencies.
Goyal succeeds IAS V. L. Kantha Rao (1992 batch), who has moved to the Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation as Secretary.
The Ministry of Mines is central to managing India’s mineral resources, policy-making, and exploration activities. With rising demand for critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements—essential for renewable energy, electric vehicle batteries, and advanced electronics—the ministry’s role has become strategically important.
Goyal’s appointment is seen as crucial in advancing sustainable mining practices, attracting private investment, and boosting India’s self-reliance in mineral resources. His experience in data-driven governance is expected to help modernize the sector with greater use of technology, transparency, and efficiency.
