Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved a wide range of policy and infrastructure initiatives aimed at strengthening connectivity, boosting sports infrastructure, enhancing riverbank protection and promoting family values among government employees.
A major highlight of the meeting was the approval of Asom Mala 3.0, a large-scale road infrastructure programme with a financial outlay of Rs 3,217 crore. The project proposes the development of a high-speed transport corridor covering 883 km of roads and the construction of 36 new bridges across 34 districts. The initiative is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity, strengthen rural–urban linkages and stimulate economic activity across Assam.
In a parallel push to position the state as a sporting hub, the Cabinet granted administrative approval of Rs 765 crore for the redevelopment of Guwahati’s historic R.G. Baruah Sports Complex. The revamped complex will feature a world-class, multi-sport facility anchored by a 25,000-seater FIFA Category 2 stadium, enabling Assam to host major national and international sporting events.
Addressing longstanding challenges of erosion and flooding, the Cabinet also approved a Community-Led Riverbank Protection Policy. The policy promotes voluntary land relinquishment to expedite embankment and protection works, encouraging deeper involvement of local communities in safeguarding riverine regions.
Additionally, the Cabinet cleared the distribution of both hard and soft copies of the Tribhuvan Prasad Tewary Commission report on the Assam Disturbances of 1983 during the upcoming Assembly session.
In a move to reinforce cultural values and family bonding, the government sanctioned special casual leave under the Matri Pitri Vandana initiative. State employees will be able to avail the leave between 9 to 12 July or 23 to 26 July, 2026, to spend dedicated time with parents and elders.
Chief Minister Sarma said the decisions underline the government’s commitment to holistic development, modernising infrastructure, and strengthening community and family ties across Assam.
