New Delhi: The government proposed an amendment to make it mandatory for e-commerce platforms to include filters based on the ‘country of origin’ of products, a move aimed at promoting domestic manufacturing and supporting the country’s self-reliance drive.
The proposal, part of the draft amendment to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, seeks to ensure that consumers can easily identify and choose Indian-made goods while shopping online.
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs stated that the move would create a level playing field for Indian manufacturers, providing local products with equal visibility alongside imported ones. It is also expected to help consumers make informed choices that align with the government’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives.
“This change ensures a level-playing field for Indian manufacturers, helping domestic products gain equal visibility alongside imported goods and encouraging consumers to choose locally made alternatives,” the ministry said in a statement.
The announcement comes at a time when thousands of Indian artisans and small businesses are facing economic strain following the US decision to double tariffs on certain goods to 50 per cent from 27 August. The higher duties have particularly affected sectors such as handicrafts, textiles and small-scale exports.
In response, the government is intensifying efforts to diversify export markets. A large delegation of Indian exporters is scheduled to begin a four-day visit to Moscow on 11 November, as part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen trade ties with Russia and reduce dependence on traditional Western markets.
The latest proposal aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to bolster domestic production, support small enterprises and enhance global competitiveness in the wake of changing international trade dynamics.
