Shri Vijayapuram, May 19 (APAC Media): The Ministry of Jal Shakti on Monday signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the governments of West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0.
The Andaman MoU was signed between Swati Meena Naik, Joint Secretary (Water), Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, and Sachin Shinde, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration, in the presence of Union Minister for Jal Shakti C R Patil, Minister of State V. Somanna and other senior officials.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Jal Jeevan Mission has reached the remotest parts of rural India and has evolved into a people-centric movement aimed at improving last-mile access to safe drinking water.”, the Union Minister said.
He added that the mission is bringing significant improvements in health, dignity and quality of life, especially for women and rural communities who earlier faced challenges in accessing safe drinking water.
Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands D K Joshi noted that the administration has effectively utilised its allocated budget during the initial phase of the Jal Jeevan Mission and remains committed to strengthening rural water infrastructure under the new phase.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Government of West Bengal and the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti for the second phase of the project is worth Rs 39,000 crore. Earlier, West Bengal had received Rs 29,000 crore under the scheme.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the state would seek additional support from the Union Government for more irrigation projects. He also reviewed monsoon preparedness with officials from the Irrigation Department and the Damodar Valley Corporation.
