Lucknow, May 19 (APAC Media): The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the construction of a 2,400-megawatt thermal power plant by NTPC in Meja, Prayagraj.
The move aims to strengthen the state’s power infrastructure amid rising electricity demand. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
According to officials, the project will be developed under the second phase of the Meja Thermal Power Project and will involve the installation of three thermal units of 800 MW each. The total estimated cost of the project is around Rs. 38,357 crore.
Energy Minister A.K. Sharma said the state government is focusing on rapidly expanding thermal power generation capacity to meet future energy requirements. He noted that nearly 4,000 MW of new thermal power capacity has been added in Uttar Pradesh over the last four years, significantly boosting the state’s power generation capabilities.
The project traces its origins to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with NTPC during the Global Investors Summit held in 2023. Officials stated that the new plant is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring a stable power supply and supporting industrial growth in the region.
The cabinet also approved the construction of a transmission line and a pooling substation in Mirzapur to facilitate power evacuation from thermal and pumped storage projects. The infrastructure project is estimated to cost around Rs. 279.47 crore.
The approvals reflect the Uttar Pradesh government’s continued emphasis on expanding energy infrastructure and supporting long-term economic growth.
