Speaking at the event, CSIR-CRRI Director Dr. Ch. Ravi Sekhar highlighted the importance of science-based and technology-driven solutions in addressing road dust pollution and enhancing urban air quality.
He reiterated the institute’s commitment to developing sustainable measures for cleaner and safer cities.
IAS Ashok Kumar, Commissioner and Secretary, Urban Local Bodies Department, Government of Haryana, lauded the efforts of CSIR-CRRI, SPA New Delhi, and CAQM in developing a comprehensive framework for road dust control. He also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to ensuring its effective implementation.
Dr. S. D. Atri, Member (Technical), CAQM, noted that road dust remains one of the major contributors to particulate pollution in the NCR. He emphasised that coordinated action involving research institutions, government agencies, and urban local bodies would be essential for the successful execution of the framework.
The agreement was formally exchanged in the presence of senior representatives from CAQM, the Government of Haryana, CSIR-CRRI, and SPA New Delhi.
The initiative builds on the Standard Framework and Detailed Guidance Document for Paving and Greening of Urban Roads issued by CAQM, which was developed based on recommendations from CSIR-CRRI.
The project will focus on four key areas, including the development of standard road cross-sections and space allocation norms, adoption of greening measures to reduce road dust, strengthening road maintenance through a Road Asset Management System (RAMS), and the use of innovative technologies in road construction and upkeep.
Officials said the collaboration marks a significant step towards reducing dust emissions, improving air quality, and creating environmentally sustainable urban road infrastructure throughout the NCR region.
