Mumbai, June 9 (APAC Media): Mumbai’s ambitious Dharavi redevelopment project is set to include India’s first multi-modal transport hub, integrating rail, metro, road, waterway and air connectivity at a single location.
The transport hub will bring together the Western, Central, and Harbour railway networks along with multiple metro corridors, creating a seamless mobility ecosystem in the heart of Mumbai.
Authorities are also exploring the possibility of extending future bullet train connectivity to Dharavi, which could further enhance its strategic importance as a major transportation node.
Under the proposed plan, air passengers will be able to complete baggage check-in procedures at Dharavi before travelling to the airport through a dedicated Airport Express connection.
A high-speed water transport service linking the hub to the airport is also being planned as an alternative to road travel.
Additionally, provisions have been made for a future vertiport to support emerging air taxi services. The integrated facility is expected to offer five modes of transport, rail, metro, road, water and air, from a single destination, drawing inspiration from global transport hubs in cities such as Singapore and Hong Kong.
During a recent review meeting, Maharashtra Chief Minister directed officials to ensure that at least 10,000 eligible Dharavi residents receive new homes by March 2028 under the first phase of the project.
Authorities aim to complete rehabilitation buildings within 42 months, while the overall redevelopment programme is expected to be executed over the next decade.
The rehabilitation plan includes modern housing units equipped with separate kitchens, bedrooms, toilets and improved ventilation.
In parallel, a dedicated support framework is being prepared for MSMEs operating in sectors such as leather, textiles, recycling and food processing. Plans are also being explored to establish cloud kitchens to support local food entrepreneurs.
The redevelopment initiative is being implemented through a special purpose vehicle under a public-private partnership between the Maharashtra government and the Adani Group.
