Noida, July 9 (APAC Media): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday said that 98.47 percent of the ₹2,000 denomination banknotes in circulation at the time of the withdrawal announcement in May 2023 have been returned to the banking system.
According to the central bank, the total value of ₹2,000 banknotes in circulation has declined from ₹3.56 lakh crore as on May 19, 2023, to ₹5,451 crore as on April 30, 2026.
Most ₹2000 banknotes in circulation have already been returned, but if you still have one, here’s what you should know:

“The total value of ₹2000 banknotes in circulation, which was ₹3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023, when the withdrawal of ₹2000 banknotes was announced, has declined to ₹5,451 crore at the close of business on April 30, 2026. Thus, 98.47% of the ₹2000 banknotes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, have since been returned,” the RBI said in a statement.
The RBI reiterated that ₹2,000 banknotes continue to be legal tender.
The facility to exchange or deposit ₹2,000 banknotes at bank branches across the country remained available until October 7, 2023.
Since May 19, 2023, the exchange facility has continued at the RBI’s 19 issue offices. From October 9, 2023, these offices have also been accepting the notes for deposit into bank accounts.
The central bank said members of the public can also send ₹2,000 banknotes through India Post from any post office in the country to any of the RBI-issued offices for credit to their bank accounts.
The RBI said it will continue to publish periodic updates on the status of the withdrawal of ₹2,000 banknotes.
