Dehradun, September 21 (APAC Media): The 18th edition of the India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise Nomadic Elephant 2026 began on Monday at the Foreign Training Node in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, bringing Indian Army and Mongolian Armed Forces personnel together for joint training in counter-insurgency operations.
The annual platoon-level military exercise, being conducted alternately between India and Mongolia, will continue until October 3. Both sides are participating with 45 personnel each.
Counter-Insurgency, Mountain Warfare Training
The exercise focuses on strengthening the joint capabilities of the two forces to conduct counter-insurgency operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain under a United Nations mandate.
Training will cover tactical-level operations, operational drills, best-practice sharing and interoperability. Troops will also undertake realistic field exercises designed to improve coordination in challenging environments.
Drones, Cyber Security, Heliborne Operations
The curriculum includes Cordon and Search Operations, Room Intervention Drills, Special Heliborne Operations and Cyber Security Training. The exercise will also feature the use of drones and counter-drone systems.
The previous edition of Nomadic Elephant was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in May-June 2025.
The exercise is aimed at further strengthening India-Mongolia defence cooperation, while enhancing mutual understanding and interoperability between the two armies.
