New Delhi: India will have to shell out around 1.5 billion dollars in the first phase of a coronavirus vaccination programme, according to estimates by the GAVI vaccines alliance and reported by news agency Reuters.
India, with a population of 1.3 billion, plans to vaccinate 300 million people over the next 6-8 months. It may procure vaccines from AstraZeneca, Bharat Biotech, Zydus Cadila.
Frontline workers and people most at risk from COVID-19 will receive the vaccination first. The vaccination will put extra burden on India’s healthcare budget, which has a total allocation of around 10 billion dollars. It is likely going to be a challenge to the government to rally extra resources.
