New Delhi: Coronavirus cases are continuing to rise and in the last 24 hours India recorded a new high of 4,12,262 new Covid cases taking the country’s tally to 2,10,77,410, according to the Union Health Ministry. There was a minor fall on Saturday but new cases are emerging in several cities. What is alarming is there seems to be no respite in the five states namely; Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Added to the problem, the cases are rising in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh as well.
The top five states which have registered maximum cases are Maharashtra with 57,640 cases, followed by Karnataka with 50,112 cases, Kerala with 41,953 cases, Uttar Pradesh with 31,111 cases and Tamil Nadu with 23,310 cases.
Around 49.52 per cent of the new cases are reported from these five states, with Maharashtra alone contributing to 13.98 per cent of the new cases.
Maximum casualties were also reported in Maharashtra with 920 deaths, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 353 daily deaths.
As many as 3,29,113 discharges have been made in the last 24 hours taking the total number of recovered cases in the country to 1,72,80,844. The active case stands at 35,66,398. The country at present has a death toll of 23,01,68.
Experts say that another lockdown looks imminent but several state governments are reluctant to impose a complete lockdown stating that it would affect the economy. On Thursday, the Telangana Government in a press release informed that it was not in favour of a complete lockdown. It may be noted that a night curfew between 9 pm to 5 am has been imposed in the capital city Hyderabad. However, experts feel that such a move is only a cosmetic change and a half-hearted effort.
A senior official of the health ministry said that the night curfew is helping during the holy month of Ramzan. Normally, during Ramzan, people roam the streets during the night and that has been curbed.
