New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday said that anyone above the age 18 can walk in to the nearest vaccination centre to get registered on the CoWIN digital platform and be inoculated against COVID-19.
It is not mandatory to pre-register online or book an appointment to get the vaccine, the government said, as it seeks to increase the pace of vaccinations and tackle the ‘vaccine hesitancy’ it has blamed for the slow rollout of vaccines in parts of the country, including rural areas. ‘Vaccine hesitancy’, the government said last week, is “a globally accepted phenomenon and should be addressed by scientifically studying the issue at the community level”.
It said it was sharing a ‘COVID-19 Vaccine Communication Strategy’ with state/UT governments. In the meanwhile, India’s total tally of COVID-19 cases surged to 2,96,33,105 with 62,224 new infections being reported in a day, while the recoveries have crossed 2.83 crores, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday.
The death count increased to 3,79,573 with 2,542 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed. India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16.
It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.
