New Delhi: The launch of the ‘Channel’ on WhatsApp has drawn the attention of various celebrities, companies, and government agencies, including the University Grant Commission (UGC). This Indian regulatory body, responsible for promoting teaching, examinations, and research in higher education, has adopted this faster communication platform by establishing its own channel on WhatsApp.
The primary objective of this WhatsApp Channel is to grow a well-informed community of educators, students, and others by enabling real-time updates on developments in higher education. Recognising the persistent digital divide in society, this initiative by the Commission aims to minimise the knowledge gap. It will provide authentic updates to interested individuals with minimal time and effort required.
UGC took to X (formerly Twitter), to announce the launch of their WhatsApp channel. In a tweet posted on Monday, October 16, they shared, “We are on WhatsApp! Join UGC India WhatsApp Channel for the latest important news related to higher education in India.”
The Commission further emphasised the inclusivity of WhatsApp, as it is accessible to nearly everyone in the country. They stated, “Recognising that not everyone may have seamless access to UGC websites or other social media handles, the WhatsApp Channel becomes a powerful tool for reaching a broader audience. In a country as diverse as India, where connectivity varies, this initiative bridges the digital divide and ensures that policy updates on higher education are readily available to all.”
This WhatsApp channel serves as a direct channel for Higher Educational Institutions to stay updated on regulatory changes, rules, and best practices. Education professionals can benefit from current information on curriculum changes, assessment methods, and professional development opportunities. Additionally, students have direct access to updates on exams, scholarships, and other aspects of their academic journey.
The statutory body also highlighted that educators will have access to real-time information on curriculum changes, assessment methods, and professional development opportunities through the UGC WhatsApp channel. Students can also refer to the channel for the most recent information on examinations, scholarships, and other relevant topics.
