Ahmedabad: Adani Total Gas Ltd. (ATGL), a leading energy and city gas distribution company co-promoted by Adani Group and Total Energies, has unveiled plans for a ‘Green Hydrogen Blending Pilot Project’. Under this initiative, ATGL is set to leverage cutting-edge technologies to integrate Green Hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas.
This project will potentially cater to the energy needs of over 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Green hydrogen, derived from the electrolysis of water using electricity generated from renewable sources, will be blended with natural gas, providing a less carbon-intensive alternative with equivalent heating capabilities.
Anticipated to be commissioned by the first quarter of the fiscal year 2024-25, the project aims to progressively increase the percentage of green hydrogen in the blend to 8% or more, subject to regulatory approvals.
Upon successful completion of the pilot phase, the hydrogen-blended fuel will be incrementally introduced to broader parts of the city and other licensed areas of AGTL. Studies suggest that an 8% hydrogen blend has the potential to reduce emissions by up to 4%.
ATGL envisions collaborating with various stakeholders, including regulatory authorities, to share its firsthand insights and contribute to the development of an ecosystem for hydrogen blending in city gas distribution across India. This collaborative effort will facilitate knowledge-sharing on operational aspects and the compatibility of blended fuel with existing infrastructure.
