New Delhi: NDA nominee Om Birla has defeated K Suresh of the INDIA group in a voice vote to win the position of Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposal, which was approved by voice vote, named Birla Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Om Birla is the first person to hold the position for a second time in 25 years, having previously served as Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He made his third appearance in the Lok Sabha representing Kota, Rajasthan.
Om Birla took the chair as Speaker after winning the election. Prime Minister Modi, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju were with him. This was the fourth election in which the Speaker was chosen, following those in 1952, 1967, and 1976.
