New Delhi: During this ongoing Lok Sabha session, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT Jitin Prasada addressed questions about government initiatives to encourage the establishment of IT companies beyond major metropolitan areas.
He highlighted several schemes aimed at promoting IT hubs in smaller cities and towns across India.
Expanding the IT Ecosystem
Prasada emphasized India’s global recognition as an IT hub and detailed the government’s efforts to decentralize the IT industry by fostering its growth in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Central to this strategy is the Software Technology Parks (STP) Scheme, which has led to the establishment of Software Technology Parks in 65 cities nationwide, with 57 of these located in smaller cities such as Bhagalpur, Indore, Rourkela, Madurai, and Kohima.
These STP centres serve as incubators, offering facilities for startups to transform innovative ideas into viable businesses. Entrepreneurs at these centres benefit from networking opportunities with venture capitalists, mentors from leading institutions like IITs and NITs, and experienced IT professionals.
Global Capability Centres in India
India’s status as a global IT hub is further underscored by the presence of approximately 1,800 Global Capability Centres (GCCs).
These centres, established by some of the world’s top companies, employ around 19 lakh individuals and are involved in the design of advanced products, including vehicle engines, semiconductor chips, and industrial machinery.
Developing IT Talent
Prasada also highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing the technical and educational infrastructure in smaller cities to develop industry-ready talent. Efforts are underway to modernize curriculums to align with industry needs, ensuring a robust pipeline of skilled professionals to support the expanding IT sector.
By focusing on smaller cities with existing technical and educational resources, the government aims to distribute the benefits of the IT boom more evenly across the country. This approach not only fosters economic growth in these regions but also strengthens India’s position as a global leader in IT innovation and services.
