Mumbai, 14 Apr, (APAC Media): Bank of Baroda and Reliance Jio have introduced a feature phone–based mobile banking platform aimed at users without smartphones. The service, called bob World Lite, runs on the JioPhone Prima 4G and supports basic digital banking functions using keypad-based navigation and low data usage.
The launch reflects growing efforts within India’s banking ecosystem to extend digital services beyond smartphone users, particularly in semi-urban and rural regions where feature phones remain widely used. By offering UPI-enabled services on entry-level devices, the platform allows customers to perform fund transfers, Scan & Pay transactions, bill payments, and mobile recharges without requiring high-end hardware.
The platform is built on a lightweight architecture designed to function in low-bandwidth environments. It enables banking transactions through simplified menus and secure access systems suitable for feature phone interfaces. Users can access the application directly from the home screen on supported devices, while existing users can download it from the JioStore.
This development aligns with the continued expansion of UPI-based payment systems across different device categories. The inclusion of profile management and onboarding features within the application indicates a shift toward making full banking services available on constrained devices rather than limiting them to balance checks or basic inquiries.
The partnership combines telecom infrastructure with banking services to distribute financial tools through widely used hardware. Such integrations are becoming more common as banks explore alternative channels to reach customers who face barriers to smartphone adoption, including cost and connectivity limitations.
With feature phones still accounting for a significant share of mobile usage in parts of India, the rollout of banking applications designed specifically for these devices signals an effort to extend digital financial systems to segments that remain outside smartphone-driven ecosystems.
