Mumbai’s district election officer and Municipal Commissioner, Bhushan Gagrani, has mandated that workplaces across the Brihanmumbai limits must allow employees to take leave to vote in the Maharashtra assembly elections on November 20. In an official release on Wednesday, Gagrani stated that any workplace failing to comply will face action under Election Commission guidelines.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to increase voter turnout across Mumbai Suburban and Mumbai City districts. To ensure that employees can vote without any financial loss, Gagrani has emphasized that workplaces, including corporate, industrial, and other establishments, should grant this voting leave.
Leave policy specifics for election day
The directive specifies that in cases where providing a full day of leave is challenging, establishments may offer a minimum of four hours of leave, provided they have prior approval from the district election officer. This flexibility is meant to accommodate essential operations while supporting citizens’ right to vote.
Exemptions under the law
Under Section 135(B) of the Representation of the People Act, exemptions are made for employees whose presence is critical to public safety or the operation of essential services. These guidelines aim to balance civic responsibility with public safety needs during the elections.
