Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police has announced the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based technology to improve crowd management and ensure safety at the Mahakumbh Mela 2025, set to take place in Prayagraj. This initiative aims to tackle the logistical challenges of managing millions of pilgrims who gather for the world’s largest religious congregation.
According to Rajesh Dwivedi, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mahakumbh Mela, AI will be used at the site in the following ways:
-
AI-powered systems would be deployed to monitor crowd density in real-time, enabling authorities to respond swiftly to any potential safety concerns.
-
The technology will include video analytics to track the movement of people and vehicles, along with predictive tools to anticipate crowd surges and optimize resource deployment.
-
Additionally, the AI system will be integrated with existing surveillance infrastructure, such as CCTV cameras and drones, to provide comprehensive monitoring.
-
Digital Lost and Found Centres will be established which will immediately register every missing person’s detail.
-
Subsequently, the AI-powered cameras will begin searching for individuals. Face recognition technology will also be utilized for this purpose. Additionally, information about missing people will be shared on social media platforms.
To support this initiative, dedicated control rooms equipped with advanced monitoring systems will be established, allowing authorities to coordinate operations seamlessly. The police are also planning to deploy digital signboards and mobile applications to provide real-time updates and guidance to pilgrims.
The Mahakumbh Mela, held every 12 years, attracts millions of devotees from across the globe, creating immense logistical and security challenges. By leveraging AI technology, the Uttar Pradesh Police aims to ensure a safer and more organized event, aligning with the state’s commitment to integrating innovation in public administration.
