Panipat:Â Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be launching the Bima Sakhi Scheme in Panipat, Haryana today. The scheme aims to promote financial literacy and insurance awareness among women across the country. Thousands of women from across Haryana are expected to participate in the grand launch ceremony.
Scope of the Scheme
The initiative, conceptualized by the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), plans to train and empower around one lakh women across India, including 8,000 from Haryana, as LIC agents. According to an official statement, women aged 18-70 years who are class 10th pass, will receive specialized training and a stipend for the first three years. They will receive Rs. 7,000 in the first year, Rs. 6,000 in the second, and Rs. 5,000 in the third year.
Post-training opportunities
On completion of the training, these women will be given the opportunity to serve as LIC agents. In the first phase, 35,000 women will be employed as LIC agents, with plans to eventually expand the scheme to benefit another 50,000 women in subsequent phases. Additionally, the graduate ‘Bima Sakhis’ will have the chance to qualify for being considered for the role of Development Officer at LIC. During the launch of the scheme, PM Modi will also distribute appointment certificates to prospective Bima Sakhis.
Significance of the Scheme
The initiative aligns with the government’s vision of empowering women to further the idea of ‘Viksit Bharat’. The scheme is a step in the right direction to make women economically self-reliant while improving their awareness about financial planning and the insurance sector. The program is anticipated to boost self-employment opportunities for women and provide them an opportunity to earn a monthly income.
Taking to his X handle to announce the launch, PM Modi tweeted, “We are committed to the empowerment of mothers, sisters, and daughters across the country. In this course, I will take the opportunity to launch the Bima Sakhi Yojana in Panipat, Haryana, today at around 2 pm. During this period, I will also lay the foundation stone and inaugurate many other projects.”
