Mumbai: The Maharashtra government is set to introduce its first Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy, along with a Cybersecurity Policy, as part of its broader digital strategy to strengthen the state’s IT infrastructure and contribute to India’s growing digital economy.
AI Policy to Support Digital Economy Growth
Information and Technology Minister Ashish Shelar has announced the formation of an AI Policy Taskforce, tasked with developing the state’s AI Policy 2025. This move aligns with the Government of India’s IndiaAI Mission, aiming to position Maharashtra as a hub for AI innovation and economic development.
The AI policy is expected to focus on fostering innovation and leveraging AI to contribute significantly to Maharashtra’s economy. The state currently plays a major role in India’s digital economy, which is projected to reach $600 billion. Maharashtra’s share in this is estimated at over ₹6 lakh crore, and the AI policy aims to further drive the state’s progress toward its $1 trillion GDP target.
Cybersecurity Policy to Strengthen IT Defenses
In addition to the AI initiative, the state government is also drafting a Cybersecurity Policy 2025. A Cybersecurity Taskforce has been established to develop a framework for safeguarding IT infrastructure across government, semi-government, and private sectors.
Inspired by India’s National Cybersecurity Policy 2013 and National Cybersecurity Strategy 2020, Maharashtra’s cybersecurity policy will prioritize mitigating cyber threats, securing critical digital assets, and fostering innovation. The policy will involve collaboration between government agencies, industries, academia, and citizens to strengthen the state’s digital resilience.
Focus on Implementation and Collaboration
The policies are part of the BJP-Sena-NCP government’s 100-day action plan to enhance the state’s digital capabilities. By prioritizing AI and cybersecurity, Maharashtra aims to address modern digital challenges and create an environment conducive to innovation, skill development, and economic growth.
This dual-policy approach signals Maharashtra’s efforts to integrate advanced technologies while ensuring a secure and robust digital infrastructure for future growth.
