New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation and restructuring of the Skill India Programme until 2026, with a total outlay of ₹8,800 crore for the period 2022-23 to 2025-26. The revamped initiative consolidates three major skill development schemes- Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0), Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (PM-NAPS), and Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) under a single framework.
The restructuring aims to streamline skill development efforts by making training more technology-driven, industry-aligned, and accessible to both urban and rural populations.
Focus on Emerging Technologies
A key change in PMKVY 4.0 is the introduction of training in AI, 5G technology, Cybersecurity, Green Hydrogen, and Drone Technology to keep up with industry demands. Over 400 new courses have been added to address evolving skill requirements.
The programme will continue offering NSQF-aligned skill training through Short-Term Training (STT), Special Projects (SP), and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for individuals aged 15-59 years.
On-the-Job Training to Boost Industry Exposure
For the first time, On-the-Job Training (OJT) has been integrated into short-term skilling courses to provide practical exposure and industry experience. The government aims to enhance employability by bridging the gap between classroom learning and workplace requirements.
Implementation Strategy
The consolidated framework seeks to ensure structured skill development through a demand-driven approach. The initiative will focus on reskilling and upskilling, particularly for marginalized communities, to create a workforce ready for emerging industry needs.
