Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Roche Diagnostics International have partnered to advance ethical artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will focus on research and development (R&D) in Responsible AI. Roche has also joined the IITM Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) as a Gold Consortium Member.
Focus on Responsible AI in Healthcare
The partnership aims to address the growing need for ethical AI frameworks in medical decision-making. CeRAI, an interdisciplinary research centre at IIT Madras, specializes in Responsible AI, working on guidelines and policies to ensure AI systems are transparent, accountable, and safe for healthcare applications.
During the ‘IITM-CeRAI, Roche Symposium on Responsible AI in Healthcare,’ held at IIT Madras, Prof. B. Ravindran, Head of CeRAI, highlighted the importance of collaboration between AI researchers and healthcare professionals. “Roche has an active research program on ethical AI and data management. Working together will help us develop robust and responsible AI systems for healthcare,” he said.
Industry-Academia Collaboration for Ethical AI
Roche Diagnostics’ involvement in the initiative aligns with its focus on AI ethics, patient safety, and data transparency in medical decision-making. Adarsh Srivastava from Roche’s Data, Analytics, and Research division emphasized that their collaboration with CeRAI will contribute to ethical AI frameworks, ensuring that AI innovations in healthcare remain equitable and beneficial for all stakeholders.
With AI playing an increasing role in diagnostics and treatment, the partnership between IIT Madras and Roche Diagnostics highlights the growing need for responsible innovation in healthcare technology. The initiative aims to ensure that AI-driven solutions adhere to ethical guidelines, preventing biases and ensuring reliability in clinical applications.
