New Delhi: India is working on its own artificial intelligence (AI) chip to reduce dependence on foreign semiconductor technology. The chip, expected to be ready by 2027, is being designed in collaboration with government-backed institutions.
Government Push for AI Independence
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has partnered with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and the National e-Governance Division to develop the AI chip. The chip will be built using the open-source RISC-V (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) architecture, which allows for a customizable processor core.
AI Compute Facility and India’s AI Strategy
In a parallel development, India is advancing its AI capabilities through the India AI Compute Facility. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently announced that the facility has secured 18,693 GPUs to support the development of a large language model (LLM) designed for India’s linguistic and cultural diversity.
Proposals for AI model development are being invited, with an estimated completion timeline of four to eight months. The initiative aims to address biases in AI datasets while creating a foundational AI model tailored to Indian needs.

India’s push to develop an indigenous AI chip aligns with its broader strategy to reduce reliance on global tech giants.
